An Afternoon to Remember
One of Australia’s most accomplished cardiac physiologists Professor Paul Korner, has been remembered at an intimate gathering at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
The Institute was fortunate to host Prof Korner’s three children, Anthony, Nicholas and Harriet, at the afternoon tea, with a number of leading scientists present.
Prof Korner was a notable academic, passionate advocate for medical research and extraordinary human being. The Paul Korner seminar series which are held weekly at the Victor Chang Institute were established in his honour and acknowledge his outstanding achievements in heart research.
Most noted for his contributions to hypertension, he was Director of the Baker Medical Research Institute in Melbourne and dedicated his life’s work to better understanding cardiovascular disease – which continues to take the life of 1 Australian every 12 minutes.
At the meeting, the Korner family was also reunited with Executive Director Prof Bob Graham, who was a long time mentor and friend of their father’s. Professor Korner’s children presented a charitable gift – a bequest from their parents Estate – on behalf of Prof Korner and his late wife Mrs Jennifer Korner, who was also a staunch supporter of medical research.
The room was filled with conversations on the research and discoveries that are currently underway. But the overall feeling of the afternoon was certainly paying homage to and sharing memories of the compassionate duo.
Anthony, Nicholas and Harriet Korner remembered their parents as generous, intelligent and highly progressive people, who believed in the power of discovery in order to combat heart disease.
Like their parents, the family also revealed their genuine support for medical research and were truly interested in the work being done by scientists at the Victor Chang Institute. The three Korner siblings have carried on the legacy of their parents and their grace on the day was admirable.
Everyone at the Victor Chang Institute is extremely grateful for their support which will directly help scientists bring our vision – a world without heart disease – to life.
