The successful operations of The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute are heavily reliant upon the dedication, commitment and vision provided by the Board of Directors and subsidiary committees.

Board of Directors

Mr Steven Lowy, AM (Chairman)

Steven Lowy was appointed managing director of Westfield Holdings in 1997 and currently serves as group managing director of the Wesfield Group. Mr Lowy holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree from University of NSW. Prior to joining Westfield in 1987, he worked in investment banking in the US. Mr Lowy is President of the Board of Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales; a director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy; a member of the Prime Minister's Business-Government Advisory Group on National Security; and Chairman of the Board of Management for the Associate Degree of Policing Practice (ADPP).

 

Mr John Kean

Mr John Kean, FCA, FAICD

Mr Kean is Executive Chairman of Pinpoint Pty Limited. He was a founding Partner of WHK Greenwoods, Chartered Accountants.

He also acts as an Independent Business Advisor and holds Directorships in various businesses involved in marketing, finance, retail, primary production, technology and international trade. In addition to serving as a Director of the VCCRI, he has been a member of the Finance and Appeals Committees of the Institute since its inception.

 

Professor Leslie D Field, BSc, PhD, DSc

Professor Field was appointed to his current position as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of NSW on 29 March 2005.

He is a graguate of the University of Sydney (PhD in Chemistry in 1979) then, following Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and then at Oxford he took up an academic post at the University in 1982. he was awarded a DSc in 1991 by the University of Sydney. He was the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney from 2001-2003 before resuming his position as Professor of Organic Chemistry until March 2005. His main areas of research are organometallic chemistry, catalysis and NMR spectroscopy. He is the arthur of more than 170 scientific papers and 4 text books. He was recipient of the Organic Chemistry Medical of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 1994 and was elected as a Fellow of the Australia Academy of Science in 1996.

Academic Awards include: Rennie Medal (1983); The Edgeworth David Medal (1986); The Organic Chemistry Medal (1992).

Professor Field is also a directorof the following companies: NewSouth Innovations Pty Ltd; Australian Technology Park Innovations Pty Ltd; The Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information; Spatial Information Systems Ltd; Smart Internet Technology Cooperative Research Centre and a member of the recently established Australian Institute of Population Ageing Research Leaders Forum.

 

Mrs Barbara Matthews

Born in Auckland, New Zealand and educated at St Mary's College prior to her nursing training at Auckland Hospital, Barbara then continued her nursing career at Merriwa District Hospital. After marrying, Barbara moved to Sydney, where she raised her three children, Justine, Sara and Robert. In addition to serving on the VCCRI Appeals Committee, Barbara is widely recognised for her leadership in philanthropy and charity work.

 

Professor Robert Graham

Professor Robert M Graham, AO, FAA, MBBS (Hons), MD, FRACP, FACP, FAHA

Professor Graham is Executive Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and a member of its Executive Management, Appeals and Finance Committees. He is the Des Renford Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science, University of NSW, and Professor (adjunct) of Physiology and Biophysics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. He is Fellow, Australian Academy of Science, and a member of the American Association for Clinical Research, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Heart Association, and the National Heart Foundation of Australia (NSW Division), and a recipient of a Centenary Medal, Federal Government of Australia. He is a Director of EnGeneIC Pty Ltd and the Rock Eisteddfod Foundation and a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of Mesoblast Ltd, Zensun (Shanghai) and the Institute of Molecular Biosciences, UQld.

Sr Anthea Groves

Sr Anthea Groves, OAM, RSC, RN LHA Dip. of Nursing Administration

Sr Anthea is a member of the congregation of the Sisters of Charity and is Patient Liaison Officer at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney.

 

 

 

Mr Chum Darvall

Chum Darvall was appointed Chief Executive Officer Deutsche Bank Australia and New Zealand in July 2002.  He joined the bank in September 1994 as Director Treasury managing the money market, swaps and foreign exchange units and group funding.  In early 1998, he became Head of Global Markets responsible for all financial market-related activities.  Chum was also part of the management group responsible for the integration of the New Zealand operation of Bankers Trust with Deutsche Bank in 1999.Chum worked in the financial markets divisions of Westpac (1985-1994) and BA Australia Ltd (1981-1985), a subsidiary of Bank of America.

Chum is a council member for the Business Council of Australia.  Board memberships include Wilson HTM, Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA), Centre for Independent Studies, Australian Theatre for Young People and the Financial Markets Foundation for Children.

Chum is married to Belinda and together they have four children.

Represented Australia in the 1978 Commonwealth Games ? bronze medal in the 4 x 400m relay.

In 2007 awarded the Kerry Packer award by the Australian Cricketers Association for his outstanding service to the ACA Player Hardship Fund.

 

Mr John McGuigan, LLB

Mr McGuigan is a co-founder of Hunter Bay Partners, a private investment company and CEO, Krispy Kreme, Australia. He has both an accounting and legal background, leading to senior positions at Price Waterhouse and then Baker & McKenzie.

He spent seven years in Hong Kong developing Baker & McKenzie's presence throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including China, before being appointed as its Executive Chairman in Chicago, where he was responsible for Baker & McKenzie's worldwide operations. He has served on the boards of a number of public and private companies, and maintains an active involvement in charitable and civic organisations. In addition to serving as a Director of the VCCRI, he is Chairman of its Appeals Committee.

Mr Angelos Frangopoulos

Angelos Frangopoulos is the CEO of Australian News Channel Pty Ltd, the leading provider of 24 hour digital news services in Australia and New Zealand.

He joined the company in July 1996, 5 months after the channel's inception. After serving as Chief of production, he was appointed Managing Editor in 2000 and then in 2004 to the role of CEO. Australian News Channel Pty Limited is joint venture of PBL Media, Seven Media and British Sky Broadcasting. ANC produces a wide range of digital news services, including Sky News Australia, Sky News New Zealand, Ske News Active, Sky News Now for mobiles, Sky News Podcasting and Sky News Online.

Before joining Australian News Channel, he held positions at British Sky Broadcasting, the Nine Network and Prime Television Canberra. He began his career in the media at Mid State Television Orange after completing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Mitchell College, Bathurst and was actively involved in the developing years of Community Radio in Sydney, Bathurst and Orange.

Mr Frangopoulos is a member of the Council of Charles Sturt University.

 

 

Mr David Craig

David Craig commenced as Chief Financial Officer of the Commonwealth Bank in September 2006.

He is responsible for the overall financial and risk management frameworks of Bank incorporating the areas of finance, risk Management, audit, security, procurement and investor relations.

David has over 30 years of experience in financial management, strategy, mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining the Bank, David was Chief Financial Officer for Australand where he was responsible for leading the finance, treasury, IT and investor relations functions.

David's other posts have included Global Transition Finance Leader for IBM Business Consulting Service following the acquisition of PwC Consulting, where he held the title of Global Chief Financial Officer, based in the Philadelphia, USA, Chief Operations Officer for PricewaterhouseCoopers Australasia & Senior Audit Partner for 15 years, specialising in banking, finance and management. David is also a director of Australian Gas Light Company, a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors & a member of the Finance and Treasury Association.

David's professional qualifications include, Bachelor of Economics and a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

 

Jill Margo, AM

Jill Margo is a medical journalist on The Australian Financial Review. She has won 17 international and national media awards, including two Walkleys. Since 2000, she has been a member of working parties charged with developing clinical and consumer guidelines for the management of prostate cancer. In 2006 Jill was awarded an Order of Australia for services to journalism and cancer. She holds a BA (Honours) in English literature, is a best selling author and biographer and lives in Sydney where she has raised her three children.

 

 

Dr Gary H Weiss

Gary Weiss has considerable experience in the international business scene. He is chairman of Coats plc and a director of various companies outside the UK including Westfield Group. He holds a masters degree in law, as well as a Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD) from Cornell University, New York. Dr Weiss is an executive director of Guinness Peat Group plc, a director of Ariadne Australia Limited, Tag Pacific Limited and Premier Investments Limited.
