Introduction

VICTOR CHANG CARDIAC RESEARCH INSTITUTE

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

IN CONJUNCTION WITH ST VINCENT'S HOSPITAL

Incorporating the 2009 Princesses' Lecture

"Cardiology at the Frontier: Development, Stem Cells and Heart Failure"

29th - 31st October 2009

Welcome

Welcome to the 11th Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute/St Vincent's Hospital International Symposium, to be held at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI) and the Garvan Institute NAB auditorium, in Sydney, Australia.

Held over three days, the theme of the 11th Symposium is heart development, stem cells and heart failure. The Symposium features prestigious International and Australian speakers who will delve into the frontiers of cardiology at the bench and in the clinic, focusing on the latest research and practical application, and covering topics including cardiac development and congential heart disease, cardiovascular systems biology, cardiac stem cells and regeneration, and heart failure therapies. This symposium presents a unique opportunity for clinicians and academics, including students and postdoctoral fellows, to keep abreast of new developments in these fields vitally important for human health.

The 11th Symposium will feature an extended program over 3 days. We are very fortunate this year to have as our special guests 5 members of the European Union Framework Program 6 consortium, HeartRepair. We are equally privileged to have as our Princesses' Lecturer Professor Andreas Zeiher, Head of the Cardiology Division, University of Frankfurt.

Princesses' Lecture

In honour of The Princess of Wales and The Crown Princess of Denmark, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute has established the Princesses' Lecture Series.

On October 31, 1996, Diana, Princess of Wales, was the Guest-of-Honour at a Gala Fundraising Dinner and met with patients and researchers. She had a longstanding interest in heart disease and regularly visited heart patients in England. During her visit, the princess also officially opened The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute's new premises.

The Crown Princess of Denmark, Princess Mary, visited the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in 2004. She toured the Institute, met with scientists, was our Guest-of-Honour at a Gala Fundraising Dinner and opened the new Lowy-Packer building which now houses the VCCRI research laboratories. In recognition of her support of the Institute and its work, the princess was bestowed with the title of Honorary Life Governor, and we also honour her support in the annual Princesses' Lecture Series.

Professor Andreas Zeiher, who will be our Princesses' Lecturer this year, leads the world in cardiac stem cell therapies. Further details of his profile are given below.

Developmental Biology Workshop

The 11th VCCRI/St. Vincent's Hospital Symposium also features a Cardiac Developmental Biology Workshop prior to the offical opening on the evening of Thursday 29th October. The program will include members of the European Union Consortium HeartRepair, who are attending the Symposium, as well as other local and other international speakers working in the cardiac developmental biology area. The idea is to create an informal atmosphere in which we can discuss in detail developmental anatomy and molecular mechanisms guiding formation of the heart, and technologies and model systems bearing on this field. All interested are welcome to attend. If you wish to attend, please indicate this on the registration page.

Major Sponsors for the 2009 VCCRI Symposium include European Union Consortium HeartRepair, Novartis, Servier Laboratories, HeartWare, Alphapharm, GSK, Actellion, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, St. Vincent's Hospital.

Sponsors are Eppendorf, Miltenyi Biotech Australia, Schenng-Plough Corporation, ISDB, Bayer, ASCC, AstraZeneca, Solvay Pharmaceuticals and Millipore.

We are very excited by this cutting edge symposium and look forward to seeing you there.

On behalf of the Organising Committee,

Prof Richard Harvey (VCCRI)                                                            Dr Eugene Kotlyar (St Vincent's Hospital)
