9 November 2018

Chief Executive Officer of UBS Australasia, and Chairman of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Mr Matthew Grounds has received the 2018 Research Australia Health & Medical Research Award for his significant contribution to research into cardiovascular disease.

Acknowledged for his unwavering support to health and medical research, Mr Grounds has been recognised with the prestigious Research Champion Award for his involvement in bolstering NSW’s cardiovascular research capacity.

A strong champion for the medical research sector, Mr Grounds has been a fierce advocate for both public funding and encouraging philanthropic investment during his five years as Chairman of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

His ongoing commitment to this sector is driven by the devastating effects cardiovascular disease has across the globe. In Australia alone, it claims the life of one person every 12 minutes, irrespective of age and gender.

Through his powerful advocacy, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute has been able to, and will continue to, make meaningful discoveries that will positively impact thousands of lives around the world.

The Executive Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Professor Bob Graham, believes this award shows the power a strong vision for investment can have for medical research.

“Not only the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute but the entire Australian biomedical research community is very fortunate to have Matthew’s ongoing commitment, contribution and support. We congratulate him on this well-deserved acknowledgment,” explained Professor Bob Graham.

Past recipients of this award include of Michael Milton OAM, Sarah Murdoch, Lisa Wilkinson AM, Ricky Ponting AO, Ita Buttrose AO OBE and Samuel Johnson OAM.

Mr Grounds’ drive to see growth in medical research funding has also resulted in the establishment of the Sohn Hearts and Minds Investment Leaders’ Conference and the Hearts & Minds Investment Fund.

Co-founded by Mr Grounds, Australia’s premier investment conference brings together some of the world’s leading investment specialists, with 100 per cent of funds raised donated to medical research.

In just three years, the Sohn Hearts & Minds Conference has raised over $8 million for the biomedical research sector.

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute congratulates Mr Grounds on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his ongoing support as we continue the fight against heart disease.
