Right now, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is investigating the potential side effects of drugs being used to try and treat COVID-19. Some of which can cause serious heart rhythm disturbances.
There were those who believed we would never eradicate smallpox, eliminate polio in Australia, or transplant hearts from one person to another.
Then there were those who did believe. And together, they made it happen.
We are currently working on the following COVID-19 projects and we urgently need your help:
1. Discovering how the virus affects the health of people with known heart conditions.
2. Investigating potential side effects of medication that is currently being tested on patients. Some medications, including immunosuppressant drugs, can cause serious heart rhythm disturbances.
3. We are also collaborating with a number of hospitals around Australia to identify whether a cell treatment already known to work against other illnesses can combat critically ill patients who have contracted the disease.
We hope to find answers that may create safer treatments to COVID-19. It is only through research that medical advances are made.
