This Christmas, donate to help small hearts

Help us find out why babies are born with damaged hearts

Ollie was born nearly ten weeks early. He was so tiny, but he faced an enormous battle, his heart was badly damaged, and he desperately needed open-heart surgery.

"Nothing seemed real. I felt so helpless" recalls Kellie, Ollie's mum.

Ollie endured two major surgeries to fix his heart before he was even 12 weeks old.

For Kellie and Ollie's dad Paul, each operation was torture as they waited for news from doctors on how their precious little boy was doing. "We were just kind of lost, wandering around the hospital," says Kellie.

Thankfully, Ollie made it through, and he is now four years old and a happy little boy. But as he grows older, he faces at least one more open-heart surgery.

What research is the Institute doing to help children like Ollie?

Our scientists are working across multiple laboratories and projects, to name just a few:

  • Developing diagnostic tools to determine women who might be at risk of having a baby born with a heart defect due to deficiency in a molecule called NAD.
  • Determining unknown genetic causes of heart defects. In a staggering eight out of 10 cases, the cause is unknown.
  • Investigating other causes of heart defects like gestational hypoxia (lack of adequate oxygen supply to the embryo) and iron deficiency during pregnancy.
  • Using cutting-edge stem cell technology to uncover crucial links in hypoplastic left heart patients, one of the most fatal heart defects.

How can you help small hearts like Ollie's this Christmas?

These potentially life-saving research projects urgently require additional funding. Will you help us reach our goal of raising $238,000 this Christmas?

Unfortunately, little Ollie and his family could not be spared from the trauma they endured.

But this Christmas, you can help us get one step closer to preventing the heartbreak of congenital heart disease for other families.
