Healthy Heart Tips

Eat lots of fruit & vegetables

These foods are naturally low in fat, and any fat present is unsaturated - the good type for our heart. They are also low in salt, another bonus for heart health. Fruit and vegetables are high in fibre and contain antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds which occur naturally in plant foods and have many functions that may include helping prevent heart disease, cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Five ways to eat more fruit and vegetables:

  1.  Include fresh fruit or fruit compote at breakfast, or add dried fruit to your cereal
  2. Snack on fresh fruit, dried fruit  or a fruit snack-pack during the day
  3. Add lots of salad to your sandwich at lunch, or choose a side salad with your meal
  4. Eat lots of vegetables or salad as your main meal and finish with a fruit-based dessert
  5. Sprinkle toasted nuts or seeds on your cereal, over a salad or incorporate in a recipe
