“Through heart surgery, Dr Victor Chang was able to save hundreds. But he knew that through research, he could save thousands.”
The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is an independent, not-for-profit research facility, dedicated to the memory of cardiac surgeon Dr Victor Chang and his passionate belief in the power of discovery.
Founded in 1994, the Institute has grown to become a world-class cardiac research and research training facility.
Our team of over 170 full-time staff work across five main Research Divisions – Cardiac Physiology & Transplantation, Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Molecular Cardiology & Biophysics, Vascular Biology and Molecular, Structural & Computational Biology.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards of excellence in our research, research training and efforts to translate each new discovery into practical medical applications.
The relief of pain and suffering, and the promotion of wellbeing, through an understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of cardiovascular biology in health and disease.
To conduct the highest quality research, with an emphasis on “molecules and mechanisms”
- To be a world-class research facility and one of the best independent medical research institutes in Australia that contributes in a major way to the health of all people, but particularly those of Australia and South-East Asia, through research into cardiovascular diseases.
- To advance knowledge and make fundamental research discoveries in cardiovascular research that can be rapidly translated into improved preventions, diagnostics and treatments, and to provide advice on health and research policy at both the federal and state levels.
- To be a leader in the adoption, application and integration of genomics, stem cell and regenerative medicine, and other cutting edge technologies and approaches, and in the training of clinicians in the interpretation of discoveries made using these technologies for improved patient management.
- To be Australia’s leading Institute for training in fundamental cardiovascular research and its application to clinical problem solving.
The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is a major partner in the St Vincent’s Hospital Research Precinct. Our home is the purpose-built Lowy Packer Building, which provides us with state-of-the-art research laboratories and support facilities – all within close and convenient reach to the other Precinct partners, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research and St Vincent’s Hospital itself.
We are also affiliated with the University of New South Wales; accredited by Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) as an independent biomedical research facility; and a member of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI).
As an independent institution, we are governed by our own Board of Directors, chaired by Mr Matthew Grounds, and are a Research Ministry within the Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
