Tackling Heart Disease in Western Australia

Tragically, heart disease is the biggest killer of the Western Australian community, claiming the lives of more than 4,300 people every year.

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is determined to change that by building a world-class cardiovascular research hub in Western Australia.

Based in Perth, this centre of excellence will not only save lives locally but deliver scientific breakthroughs that will benefit people the world over.

It’s a bold vision but the days of heart disease being overlooked and underfunded in WA are now well and truly over.

Heart Research in Western Australia

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute appointed Professor Livia Hool as Faculty in Western Australia in 2013.

Key partnerships with Wesfarmers and Woodside have allowed Professor Hool to build on her pioneering work with the 2021 launch of Western Australia’s first dedicated centre of heart research and a new Wesfarmers, UWA-VCCRI Chair in Cardiovascular Research.

In March 2022, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and UWA signed an official strategic partnership to significantly boost heart disease research in WA and across the country even further. As well as the ratified affiliation, the Institute also celebrated the opening of its second laboratory at UWA, headed by Dr Lee Nedkoff.

With this strong foundation, the Centre looks to enhance cardiovascular research in WA, fast-track breakthroughs in heart disease treatments, and ultimately, improve the heart health of those far beyond the State’s borders.
