Dr Chai-Ann Ng

Dr Chai-Ann Ng completed his Bachelor of Chemical Science (Hons) in 2003 and PhD in 2008 at the La Trobe University in Melbourne where he utilised Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to determine three-dimensional protein structures. In 2009, he moved to Sydney to join the Mark Cowley Lidwill Research Program in the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. Since then he has employed NMR spectroscopy, electrophysiology and a range of cell-biology techniques to study the structure-and-function of hERG potassium channels. In 2013, he received the “Young Biophysicist of the year” award from the Australian Society for Biophysics. He became a Senior Staff Scientist at the Victor Chang Institute in 2017 and is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of New South Wales. He also holds an associate position at the CSIRO.
Dr Ng’s current research focuses on developing high-throughput methods to determine the risk for sudden cardiac arrest in patients with long QT syndrome by phenotyping different clinical genetic mutations found in hERG potassium channels. He is also developing high-throughput methods to screen for potential small molecules that could be used as therapeutics to treat patients that have long QT syndrome.
