Professor Jamie Vandenberg

Jamie Vandenberg is a medical graduate of the University of Sydney and received his PhD from the University of Cambridge. After post-doctoral training at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge he was appointed a group leader at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in 2002. He established the Mark Cowley Lidwill Research Program in Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2007 and was appointed co-deputy director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in 2010. He is a conjoint Professor in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of New South Wales.

Jamie is recognised internationally as an expert in cardiac electrophysiology, particularly for his research on hERG K+ channels and the molecular basis of inherited and drug-induced cardiac arrhythmias. He has consulted for biotech and pharmaceutical companies both in Australia and the UK. He is a member of the ion channel working group advising the Food and Drug Administration on the development of better assays to screen for cardiotoxicity of all new drugs and a member of the Variant Curation Expert Panel for Cardiac K+ channels advising the ClinGen consortium on classification of variants in inherited arrhythmia syndromes. He is a recipient of the Bob Robertson Medal from the Australian Society for Biophysics and was the NSW Ministerial Award for Cardiovascular Research Excellence.

Jamie has served as President of the Australian Society for Biophysics and has served on the councils of the Australian Physiological Society, the Australasian Division of the International Society for Heart Research and Science and Technology Australia. He is Deputy President of the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance and sits on the Executive of the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network and co-chairs the CVRN EMCR committee. He is also a member of the Medical Committee of the Heartbeat of Football, a community organisation dedicated to promoting heart health through sport. In 2015 he was elected to the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society and the International Society of Heart Research.
