23 April 2024

Our annual Soirée by the Sea wouldn’t be the success it is without our hardworking Young Appeals Committee.

Drawn from various backgrounds – from acting to property, journalism, and law – they all share a passion for raising funds and awareness to beat heart disease.

Here YAC committee members Christian Wilkins, Simon Cohen, and James Camilleri reveal what motivates them to give up their time for the Institute and why this year’s Soirée is a must-have ticket.

Why did you join the Young Appeals Committee?

Anyone who knows me knows I am a HUGE Grey's Anatomy fan, which sparked a late in young adulthood interest in medical research. Getting to hear about and witness some of the incredible facilities and meet the amazing doctors at the Institute just opened my mind to so much about heart disease, especially when it comes to young people. So, when the Institute's team asked if I’d join the committee, I jumped at the chance to work alongside and hear directly from so many people and doctors that I admired.

Why is raising funds for heart disease so important to you?

I think there is a misconception that heart problems are an 'older' person's disease, which is fundamentally untrue. I’m a big believer that widespread education and awareness is the first step in finding a solution. I want to help use whatever platform I have for the better.

Why should people come to Soirée by the Sea?

Well first and foremost Soirée by the Sea is fun, we know who our audience is, and we have a two-birds kind of mindset, if we can raise funds, create awareness, AND give people a good time, they’re much more like to spread what they’ve learned and continue to support the Institute!

What does the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute mean to you?

Getting to see firsthand some of the research facilities and hearing directly from the scientists was truly one of the best days. My tour went for almost an extra hour because I was asking so many questions. I was having my Dr Christina Yang moment. To get to stand alongside these leaders of medical research was truly an honour and I’ll forever be grateful.

Why did you join the Young Appeals Committee?

Eight years ago, I was introduced to Dr Victor Chang’s son Marcus, who told me about the work of the Institute in building on the legacy of Dr Chang. Before meeting Marcus, I had heard of Dr Chang, largely because of the shocking circumstances of his death, however, I was generally ignorant of the incredible impact he had made as a cardiac surgeon and a pioneer of modern heart transplantation. Upon meeting Marcus, and then subsequently learning more about Dr Chang, I had a strong desire to get involved with the Institute to ensure other young people – and more importantly, generations to come - could continue to have awareness of, be inspired by, and build upon the work of Dr Chang.

Why is raising funds for heart disease so important to you?

There are so many important causes needing our time and support. Medical research deserves our attention as its outcomes have the potential to benefit the greatest number of people. We all know someone affected by heart disease – it is still leading the cause of death worldwide, killing more than all cancers combined. Hence raising funds for the Institute can alleviate suffering, improve health outcomes, and ultimately save lives - not just in Sydney, but across the globe.

Why should people come to Soirée by the Sea?

It’s an absolute blast. The Young Appeals Committee members are all very social people, who like a party and a good time, so we’ve designed this fundraiser to be exactly that. I often say to friends that instead of going to the same restaurants over and over, buy a ticket to the Soirée, enjoy Iceberg’s incredible food and cocktails, and meet fabulous people, and inevitably they come back every year.

What does the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute mean to you?

The Institute embodies the tireless dedication of researchers, clinicians, and supporters who strive to conquer heart disease, one breakthrough at a time. Its work is not just about scientific discovery; it's about transforming lives and empowering individuals to live healthier, happier, and longer lives. Powerful stuff!
