Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute's Pledge Against Racism

Our Pledge Against Racism

June 11, 2020

Recent events have compelled the Institute to reaffirm its commitment to recognising, addressing and eradicating all forms of racism and ethnic oppression.

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute condemns racism, and we stand in strong support of Indigenous and Black communities in Australia and around the world.

The Institute embraces and celebrates diversity in all its facets. We strive to eradicate all forms of discrimination, but we understand that we can do more in our efforts to address racism. We look for opportunities to do better. We understand that bias can be unconscious or unintentional, and we know that we have to continuously educate ourselves to not perpetuate oppression.

As an organisation that is dedicated to the relief of pain and suffering and the promotion of wellbeing, this is our pledge:

  • We vow to purposefully identify, discuss and challenge issues of race and ethnicity and the impacts they have on our organisation, its systems, and its people.
  • We vow to correct any inequities we may discover and gain a better understanding of ourselves during this active process.
  • We vow to be accountable in our efforts to reveal social injustice and support the victims of racism, abuse and discrimination.

We make this pledge with the shared knowledge and belief that #BlackLivesMatter.

Acknowledgement of Country

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.
